Week 14

This week all classes presented their speeches. I love hearing about someone they think is a hero! we've had a wide range of heroes from family members to Helen Keller and Mother Teresa. They are getting better at speaking up and finding interesting hooks to start their speeches.

All classes also finished reading The Odyssey this week. In conjunction with this reading, classes have had reading quizzes and turned in Analysis/Vocab Questions from their textbooks. We covered the Hero's Journey and students took notes that will help them on their final exam/essay. (Helpful Video)

Lastly, students were given their vocab list for term 2. There will be a test on these words in class on Dec 9 & 10.

SPEECHES

HERO SPEECHES start NEXT week*. YAY!

ASSIGNMENT:

A “HERO” in literary terms is a figure who goes on a journey, faces a great trial, but ultimately comes back to better or heal their world. Their reach and influence extend beyond themselves.

Prepare a 3 (2-4) minute speech on a Hero of personal choice (must have been born before 1980). Use the speech to tell us about the person and WHY they are a hero to you, us, or the world. Your speech should be well organized, written in MLA format, hook our interest, shed new light on the Hero, and demonstrate effective use of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Speeches will receive two grades: one for the Written Paper, one for the Oral Presentation.
